From PRP to Exosomes to PDRN (Salmon Sperm)- Understanding it All

June 13, 2026

Recently is ahred about my experiencing with microneedling with PDRN at SkinSpirit.

I wanted to go a bit deeper, as I have done both PRP, PRFM, PDRN AND Exosomes at this point. (Major confusion, I know).

So today, let’s review the differences.

PRFM utilizes your own highly concentrated blood platelets, PDRN relies on purified salmon DNA to trigger cellular repair, and Exosomes act as ultra-potent, lab-derived signaling messengers from human stem cells.

A direct comparison of their key differences highlights how each treatment operates:

PDRN (Salmon DNA)PRFM (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix)Exosomes
Primary SourcePurified salmon sperm DNAPatient’s own autologous bloodLab-derived human stem cells
Active ComponentDeoxyribonucleotide polymersConcentrated platelets + fibrin scaffoldGrowth factors, mRNA, & microRNA
How it WorksBinds to cell receptors to repair tissueSlowly releases growth factors via fibrin gelDirect cell-to-cell signaling
Primary BenefitDeep hydration and skin barrier repairVolumization and long-term collagen synthesisRapid cellular renewal and inflammation drop
Risk of ReactionExtremely low (highly purified)Zero (uses your own biological material)Minimal (acellular, no donor DNA)

PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide)

  • The Mechanism: PDRN utilizes DNA molecules extracted from salmon or trout sperm. These molecules are purified to eliminate proteins and prevent allergic reactions, matching human DNA closely.
  • Key Strengths: It excels at accelerating tissue regeneration, boosting microcirculation, and deeply hydrating the skin.
  • Best For: Patients seeking a glowing, “glass skin” effect, overall skin barrier repair, and a reduction in fine lines or acne scarring.

PRFM (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix)

  • The Mechanism: PRFM is the next generation of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma). Your blood is drawn and spun in a specialized centrifuge to create a dense fibrin matrix that protects the platelets.
  • Key Strengths: The gel-like fibrin matrix prevents platelets from degrading quickly. This allows growth factors to slowly release into the skin over 7 to 10 days, compared to just hours with traditional PRP.
  • Best For: Patients looking for structural anti-aging, under-eye rejuvenation, deep wrinkle revision, and natural volume enhancement.

Exosomes

  • The Mechanism: Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles harvested from human umbilical or placental stem cells. They do not contain cells or donor DNA, but they are packed with thousands of growth factors, lipids, and genetic blueprints.
  • Key Strengths: Because they mimic natural cell signaling, they deliver the highest concentration of regenerative signals to surrounding skin cells, inducing massive collagen and elastin synthesis.
  • Best For: Maximum anti-aging results, severe hyperpigmentation, advanced acne scarring, and the fastest possible reduction in post-microneedling downtime.

Are you trying to target a specific skin concern, like deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or acne scars? Sharing your main goals can help narrow down the ideal choice.
