Why I’m Still Choosing Long Hair
I don’t care that I’m 50—I still love long hair. Not overly styled, not perfect, not “done.” I’m talking about that effortless, undone, surfer-girl texture that feels soft, natural, and a little bit wild in the best way.
For me, it’s never been about chasing trends. It’s about feeling like myself. And this version of my hair—long, airy, and full of movement—feels the most like me, always.
The Look: Soft, Undone, and Naturally Textured
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s ease. I want hair that looks like I just came from the beach, even if I didn’t. Think loose waves, natural volume, and that slightly imperfect finish that somehow looks better than anything overly styled.
The best part? It doesn’t require a complicated routine or constant heat styling. In fact, I’ve built my entire approach around doing less—and letting my hair do more on its own.
My Go-To Styling Techniques (No Heat Required)
Over time, I’ve found a few simple techniques that give me that effortless texture without damaging my hair.
The key: The “Top Knot”
After washing (my go to is this Divi Hyrdating Shampoo), I skip the blow dryer completely. Instead, I twist my hair into one high knot (or sometimes two smaller ones) and let it air dry.
When I take it down, I’m left with soft, messy waves that feel natural—not forced. It’s my favorite lazy-girl trick that actually works.
Structured Waves
If I want something a little more polished, I’ll do two braids instead of knots.
It gives me a more “organized” wave—still relaxed, but a bit prettier and more defined. Perfect when I want that balance between effortless and intentional.
Daily Maintenance: Less Is More
I’ve really simplified my routine over the years, and honestly, my hair has never been healthier.
Washing Less Frequently
I only wash my hair every 2–3 days now with this. Letting my natural oils come through has made a huge difference in softness and overall health.
My go-to is the Divi hydrating shampoo—it cleans without stripping, which is key when you’re not washing daily. I usually skip conditioner unless my hair really needs it, but I keep the matching one on hand just in case.

Avoiding Heat
I rarely use hot tools anymore. Less heat = less damage, less breakage, and better texture over time. My hair actually behaves better when I leave it alone.
Volume + Texture (Without the Effort)
For that lived-in, airy volume, I rely on a couple of staples:
- Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo for refreshing roots and adding lift
- Cool Girl Barely There Texture Mist for that perfectly undone finish
They give just enough grit and body without making my hair feel heavy or sticky.
The Small Habits That Make a Big Difference
Silk Pillowcases
Switching to a silk pillowcase from Sleep & Glow has been one of those quiet upgrades that really pays off. Less tangling, less breakage, and smoother hair in the morning.
Gentle Brushing
I use a boar bristle brush (like the ones from Bonne Brosse) to distribute natural oils and keep everything soft and healthy without causing damage.
Beauty From Within
I’ve also become a big believer in internal health. Supplements, good nutrition, and hydration all play a role in how your hair grows and feels. It’s not just about what you put on your hair—it’s what you put in your body too.
The Bottom Line
Long hair after 50 isn’t about rules—it’s about choice.
For me, it’s about embracing a style that feels effortless, natural, and a little undone. It’s about working with my hair instead of against it. And most importantly, it’s about feeling confident in something that still brings me joy.
Because beauty doesn’t have an age limit—and neither does great hair.
